S&P Global Agrees to Acquire OpenZeppelin
OpenZeppelin would retain its name and CEO as S&P Global adds smart-contract security expertise following its separate investment in Kaiko.
Key Takeaways
- S&P Global signed an agreement to buy OpenZeppelin; the deal remains subject to closing conditions.
- The smart-contract security business would join S&P Global after its separate investment in digital-asset data provider Kaiko.
Details
S&P Global announced on September 17 that it had agreed to acquire OpenZeppelin, in a deal that would add smart-contract security expertise to its digital-asset business. Financial terms were not disclosed.
OpenZeppelin would keep its name and operate as a separate business unit. CEO Demian Brener would continue to lead it, reporting to Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings.
Alongside security assessments, OpenZeppelin develops an open-source library of reusable smart contracts. Its Contracts documentation lists token implementations, access controls and governance components. Developers use these building blocks to specify how tokens operate and which accounts can perform particular actions.
Market Analysis
The agreement extends a week of investment across different parts of digital-asset infrastructure. On September 14, Kaiko announced that S&P Global had led an extension of its Series B financing. That relationship covers market data, valuations and connecting onchain activity with financial analytics.
The OpenZeppelin deal would add expertise in the code that runs those markets. For institutions issuing tokenized assets, valuation data and contract controls address different questions: what an asset is worth, and how its onchain functions are implemented. If completed, the acquisition would bring contract-security specialists into the group alongside its existing investment in a data provider.
